What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax (cerumen) is healthy. It is a natural substance produced to protect and clean your ears. Ear wax:

  • Is antimicrobial, helping to prevent infection

  • Keeps the ear canal moisturized, preventing dryness and itchy ears

While ear wax is healthy, to help prevent prevent wax buildup safely at home, you can use a few drops of the following a couple times a week:

  • Mineral oil

  • Olive oil (Earol)

  • Murine

Avoid using cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other foreign objects in your ears, as they will push wax deeper and may cause injury.

Preparing for a Wax Removal Appointment

To make wax removal easier and more comfortable:

  • Use oil or softening drops once or twice daily for a minimum of 5 days before your visit

You can use any of the following to soften wax:

  • Mineral oil

  • Baby oil

  • Olive oil (Earol)

  • Murine

Do not use drops if you have a perforated eardrum, tubes in your ears (t-tubes), or have been advised by a doctor to keep your ears dry.

Most wax can be removed in one visit, but severe buildup may require multiple visits. Softening beforehand greatly improves comfort and success.
