How Hearing Aids Work
Devices designed to help you hear better
What Are Hearing Aids?
Hearing aids are small, smart electronic devices designed to amplify sound for individuals with hearing loss.

Hearing aids are medical devices prescribed and programmed by your audiologist for your hearing loss, and to suit your specific listening needs.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?
Hearing aids pick up sound through a microphone, process it using sophisticated computer technology, and deliver the final signal to your ear through a tiny speaker.
Modern hearing aids automatically adjust to different environments—so whether you’re in a quiet room or a busy café, you can enjoy natural, effortless hearing.
The main components of a hearing aid include:
Microphone
Picks up sound from the environment.
Amplifier
Increases the volume of the sound.
Computer
Processes sound.
Receiver (Speaker)
Delivers sound output.
Battery
Powers the hearing aid.

Hearing Aid Styles
Receiver-in-the-Canal (RIC)
Reveiver-in-the-canal style hearing aids (sometimes called receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) hearing aids) are the most versatile and widely used style of hearing aid. All the components of the hearing aid except the receiver (speaker) are housed on top of the ear. The receiver of the hearing aid attaches to the top part via electronic wire, with the main part of the receiver inserted into the ear canal. They are cosmetically discreet, light-weight, comfortable, and are capable of treating mild to severe hearing loss.

Behind-the-ear (BTE)
Traditional behind-the-ear style hearing aids are typically used to treat severe to profound hearing loss. All the electronic components of the hearing aid are housed in the unit that sits on top of the ear, which is coupled to an ear mold via tubing to send sound into the ear.

Custom Fit Hearing Aids
Custom fit hearing aid styles range in naming and size. From largest to smallest, they are called in-the-ear (ITE), in-the-canal (ITC), completely-in-the-canal (CIC), and invisible-in-the-canal (IIC). These hearing aids have no component that sits on top of the ear, and are custom fit to your individual ear anatomy.

Instant Fit Hearing Aids
Some manufactures such as Signia and Oticon make in-the-canal (ITC) and completely-in-the-canal (CIC) style hearing aids that are not custom shaped to your ear. Instead, they use a flexible ear piece (called a dome) to fit comfortable in the ear.

CROS/Bi-CROS
For those who have single-sided hearing loss/deafness, a CROS (contralateral routing of signal) device is worn on the ear with hearing loss, and sound is wireless played into the better hearing ear via a hearing aid. If the better hearing ear has hearing loss, amplification is also provided. If that ear is normal, no additional amplification is provided.

CROS/BiCROS systems are available in RIC, BTE, custom fit, and instant fit styles.
