Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the outer third of the ear canal.

It is not actually wax, but is comprised of :

• Keratin

• Cholesterol

• Long-chain fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated)

• Squalene

• Wax chemical compounds

• Alcohol chemical compounds

It is produced from sebaceous and ceruminous glands.

While ear wax is healthy and usually exits the ear naturally, sometimes it can accumulate or become impacted. It may be time to have your ear wax removed if:

Avoid Inserting Objects in the Ear: Inserting cotton swabs or other objects can push ear wax deeper into the ear canal, potentially causing ear wax impaction, and may damage the skin in your ear canal or your ear drum.

Soften Ear Wax: Using a softening agent such as olive oil, baby oil, or mineral oil, can help to soften impacted ear wax. They can also be used on a regular basis to help prevent ear wax impaction. Talk to your audiologist for advice.
