An otoscope and hearing aid placed on a tray.

It can be startling to all of a sudden have no sound coming from your hearing aid.

In most cases this can be solved with some at-home troubleshooting, or a quick fix at your hearing clinic.

Check the Power

  • Make sure your hearing aid is turned on:

    • Disposable batteries: replace current battery with a new one.

    • Rechargeable: fully charge the device. Confirm your devices are properly seated in their charger.

Restart Your Hearing Aid

  • Disposable batteries: open and close the battery door to restart the hearing aid.

  • Rechargeable: put your hearing aid into the charger for 10 to 15 seconds, then remove. Take note of what colour of light shows on your device while in the charger.

Check the Wax Filter & Dome

  • Replace the wax filter, whether they appear clogged or not.

  • Replace the dome or clean the earmold.

Check the Ear Mold & Tubing (for Behind-the-Ear models)

  • Inspect the tubing and earmold for moisture, cracks or blockages.

  • If there is visible debris or moisture, remove what you can and drop into the clinic to have new tubing installed.

Adjust the Volume or Program Settings

  • Ensure the volume isn't set to the lowest level.

  • If your hearing aids have an app or manual controls, ensure your volume or program didn't accidentally get changed.

  • You can 'reset' the hearing aids to their normal settings

    • Disposable batteries: open and close the battery door.

    • Rechargeable:  place them in their charger, letting sit for 10 to 15 seconds, then remove.
